Bringing the Arch of Time to Life: A Community Supported Vision

The Arch of Time is a celebration of community, sustainability, and creativity. From the very beginning, the project has been shaped by the voices of Houston residents. Through a series of events, forums, and public programs, the team behind The Arch has worked to ensure that the community is part of every step of the journey—from early design conversations to construction, and eventually to the benefits the finished piece will bring as a community gathering place.

In March 2023, the LAGI team, artist Riccardo Mariano, and representatives from CenterPoint Energy gathered in Houston’s East End to connect with local residents. A working scale model of The Arch sparked conversations about solar energy and sustainable design. It was during this event that a community member suggested the name “Arch of Time,” which the artist embraced as the official title. The community also had the idea for colors within the light beam to distinguish the time of day.

The team partnered with the Tech Connect program, where elementary school students explored the science behind the sundial-inspired design and learned how solar power works. It was a chance to plant the seeds of innovation and environmental awareness in the next generation.

Community engagement began even earlier, during the artist selection process. In January 2023, three artists from the LAGI portfolio were invited to present their proposals to city officials and local stakeholders. After thoughtful consideration, Riccardo Mariano was commissioned to bring Arch of Time to life.

Most recently, on March 22, 2025, the project team hosted a community event at Mason Park, where residents could once again connect with the vision of The Arch and the beauty of solar-powered art. Through events like this, the project remains committed to openness, collaboration, and honoring the voices of the community—helping to reflect Houston’s identity and support its future.

This is a really cool idea. I did not know that art can be integrated with solar panels. Very creative! The community needs to be informed about renewable energy. Having this artwork would be very motivational.
