Land Art Generator Initiative
The Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) is a U.S. 501(C)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2008 by Elizabeth Monoian and Robert Ferry to leverage the power of art and design to accelerate the global response to climate change.
LAGI is advancing the pace of the energy transition by engaging the public in the co-design of our clean energy future, bringing together the disciplines of public art, urban planning, creative placemaking, and renewable energy. We believe any creative placemaking opportunity can also be a climate solution. The goal of the Land Art Generator is to accelerate the transition to a post-carbon world by providing exemplary models of renewable energy infrastructures that engage communities in their creation, add value to public space, inspire, and educate.
LAGI provides context-specific and culturally-relevant design solutions for distributed clean energy that reflect the needs of local communities through design competitions, direct commissions, calls for proposals, and participatory co-design projects for people of all ages.
Open design competitions have included LAGI 2010 Dubai/Abu Dhabi, LAGI 2012 Freshkills Park, LAGI 2014 Copenhagen, LAGI 2016 Santa Monica, LAGI 2018 Melbourne, LAGI 2019 Abu Dhabi, LAGI 2020 Fly Ranch, LAGI 2022 Mannheim, and LAGI 2025 Fiji. These have resulted in over 1,500 designs from around the world for artworks that generate clean energy and provide other sustainable co-benefits for communities.
LAGI participatory design projects foster a culture of creative entrepreneurship and include: Solar Mural artworks that combine the storytelling power of murals with building-integrated solar installations, Art+Energy camps that deliver community solar projects designed by local youth, as well as other hands on programs.
